The Cybersecurity Evangelist, Episode 3, Part 1 – “Am I Doing Enough?” (The 5 P’s of Basic Security)

By Jennifer Lyn Wallker

In this third episode of The Cybersecurity Evangelist (TCE), I am joined by Shay Trembley. Shay and I discuss practical tips to the question “Am I doing enough?” We begin our chat with a very real-world incident that nearly cost a small-town water utility $3.2M in fraudulent wire transfers. Then we make a quick nod to two very “human-oriented” awareness initiatives before wading into what I am calling on this episode, “the 5 P’s of basic cybersecurity” to help make sure you ARE doing enough! You’ll also hear other interesting and fun tidbits… like how Shay’s non-technical husband got a “tech award” – that went to his head!; what Sun Tzu’s The Art of War has to do with cybersecurity awareness; and perhaps THE biggest cybersecurity cliché, errrr, ummmm… awareness advice…”it’s not if, but when” you will experience (or be impacted) by a cyber incident.

Who is Shay Trembley? She is the Information Security Manager at South Blount Utility in Maryville, Tennessee. Prior to her role at South Blount, Shay spent 12 years as the IT Manager and Cyber Awareness Trainer at Foothills Bank & Trust, getting her start in the world of cyber back in 2007. Over the last 13+ years, her experiences in financial fraud, identity theft, and cyber breaches have given her a unique perspective on cybersecurity, both for the workplace and the individual. Those experiences, and her passion for sharing knowledge have led to a career in Information Security and Cyber Awareness. Shay strives to bring everyone to the table on cybersecurity, both at home and at work. And, like a good East Tennessean, she loves Tennessee Football, spending time in the Smoky Mountains, and drinking sweet-tea!

As always, our hope is that TCE will have a little something for everyone – and provide information and education in small, manageable, relevant snippets to enhance cybersecurity awareness for all.

One more thing!! I forgot to give a shoutout to a very important event. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) kicked off its 3rd Annual National Cybersecurity Summit 2020 on Wednesday, September 16, 2020. CISA will present the remaining content every Wednesday through October 7. Businesses (and individuals, alike) should consider attending some (or the rest of the sessions). The summit focuses on providing cybersecurity strategies, policies, and/or initiatives that facilitate collaboration between the full range of government, defense, civilian, intelligence, and law enforcement entities.
