At the same time, the scale and complexity of critical infrastructure operational environments, sometimes spanning hundreds of square miles, makes human monitoring alone insufficient.
Consequently, artificial intelligence (AI) offers an innovative approach to physical security and operational resilience, enabling proactive physical threat detection and faster, more effective emergency response. Nevertheless, owners and operators must weigh the potential benefits and risks before introducing AI into their operations.
Video Surveillance & Other Security Sensors
One of the most impactful uses of AI, in terms of physical security, is intelligent video surveillance. Modern AI systems can monitor thousands of live camera feeds at once, detecting anomalous behaviors like loitering, unauthorized entry, or placing suspicious items. In contrast to conventional surveillance methods that depend on human vigilance and are susceptible to fatigue, AI systems constantly analyze typical activity patterns and promptly identify irregularities. This enables security teams to intervene before incidents escalate, shifting security responses from reactive to proactive operations.

Furthermore, in emergency response contingencies, AI can augment coordination and decision-making between multiple stakeholders within an organization and across industries. During natural disasters such as hurricanes, AI can provide real-time insights by analyzing live data streams and producing actionable recommendations. For example, AI can optimize evacuation routes based on current weather conditions. Enabling first responders to act more quickly and reduce physical impacts to people and infrastructure assets.
Another key advantage of AI is its ability to support a company’s security and emergency response training. Organizations can use AI-driven models to simulate various threat scenarios during training, from active shooters to natural disasters. Security training and exercises, enhanced by AI, can provide more complex events for security teams to test response strategies and identify gaps in standard operating procedures.
Real-World Use Case
Around the world, critical infrastructure organizations are already putting AI-enabled security systems into practice. One notable case study is the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, one of the largest ports in the world. The port utilizesadvanced AI-powered video analytics and sensor devices to monitor extensive operational areas, including cargo terminals, shipping lanes, and restricted areas. By leveraging AI-enabled threat detection, the Port’s security team can automatically detect suspicious events such as unauthorized vessel movements, perimeter breaches, or the handling of suspicious cargo.
AI Risk Considerations
Although AI brings incredible advantages and serves as a force multiplier, its application in critical infrastructure security demands thoughtful attention to ethical, privacy, and operational issues. Organizations must ensure the vast amounts of data compiled is handled responsibly, avoid bias in AI models, and maintain transparency in the decision-making process. Additionally, AI should augment, not replace, human expertise. There should always be a human in the loop. The best approach is hybrid, combining advanced AI capabilities with skilled security personnel who can interpret seemingly innocuous events and make informed decisions to enable a proactive security response.
An additional consideration for organizations is the potential risks that can occur by deploying AI in physical security environments. For example, overreliance dependence on automated systems may introduce vulnerabilities in cases where models malfunction, are improperly configured, or produce inaccurate results. These types of issues can result in overlooked threats or unwarranted operational disruptions, potentially leading to a significant security impact. AI systems, moreover, can be vulnerable to adversarial attacks like data poisoning or evasion techniques designed to bypass detection. Lastly, system outages or integration failures across linked AI-platforms can reduce situational awareness at critical times, such as during a natural disaster.
